Since stepping up as owner and head coach in 2023, Jo Subia has breathed new life into the club after the challenges of the pandemic. A proud local from Atascadero, Jo is more than just a coach — he’s an athlete who lived the grind, the triumphs, and the hard lessons of the fight game. His mission is clear: to cultivate a gym environment where everyone — from curious beginners to serious contenders — can grow, excel, and thrive.
Jo’s approach is holistic. He believes boxing is about building mental toughness, physical strength, and a supportive community that pushes you to be your best every day. With the help of his sons, JJ and Maddox, the Goat Shack family continues to uphold a tradition of excellence, mentoring dozens of fighters along the way.

Owner & Head Coach
Jo Subia took the reins of Goat Shack Boxing Club post-pandemic in 2023 with a clear vision to build a thriving boxing community. A local son of Atascadero, Jo boasts years of experience both as a fighter and a coach. His dedication to the sport and his family shines through every training session. Jo’s expertise is not just in technique but also in instilling discipline, respect, and confidence in his fighters. His vision extends beyond competition — he wants to empower all members to lead healthier, stronger lives both in and out of the ring.
Under Jo’s leadership, the gym has welcomed dozens of new fighters, from kids taking their first jab to adults pursuing fitness and confidence. His relentless passion keeps the gym a buzzing hub of activity and progress every day.
Fighter & Coach
JJ Subia, Jo’s eldest son, is a rising star in the amateur boxing scene. A Golden Gloves State Champion and ranked among the top 10 nationally, JJ carries the torch of the family legacy with pride and determination. His upcoming professional debut in July 2025 is eagerly anticipated by the boxing community.
Beyond the ring, JJ serves as a mentor and coach at Goat Shack. He’s known for his dedication, discipline, and ability to motivate others to push past their limits. JJ’s insight into competitive boxing makes him a valuable guide for new fighters who aspire to compete and win.
Corner Man, Fighter & Coach
Maddox, the youngest of the Subia trio, has recently started his amateur boxing career. Though early in his journey, Maddox already embodies the spirit and enthusiasm that define Goat Shack Boxing Club. He supports the team in the corner during fights and actively helps train members of all ages.
His passion for boxing is matched only by his desire to help others improve — whether that’s a kid learning footwork for the first time or an adult building strength and confidence. Maddox looks forward to continuing his career while nurturing the next generation of fighters.
